Friday 10th April 2026: Mixed Media Demonstration with Octavia Madden
Thanks Penny for this write-up & photos Local mixed media artist Octavia Madden gave OVAS members an interesting demonstration of her environmental drawings and paintings. She studied art in Wales and London, before moving to Devon, where she became inspired by the environment of Dartmoor, particularly the lichens of Wistman’s Wood. Observational drawing is an important part of her working process. Octavia used Black Wing pencils to do a blind drawing of an oak leaf, only looking at the leaf. She then used water soluble crayons and luminous pencils on black paper to draw lichens, thinking about composition. Her time at the Royal Drawing School changed her way of thinking about drawing as a stand alone art technique. Her paintings are mostly done on a large scale canvas, using Golden acrylic paints. She does a light wash first and then builds up the layers , concentrating on pattern and shape of the background and subjects. She usually has multiple drawings and paintings on the go at once. The members were invited to ask questions and we got the chance to look closely at Octavia’s drawings, paintings and sketchbooks. |
