Margaret ...

I first ventured into the world of art when I was in my late forties. This was at a class where for the first three or four sessions we had to draw the same boot but without a lot of help. Then it was a potted primula, again for several sessions. At the end of the term I left feeling very discouraged.

I then enrolled at a local authority watercolour evening class. What a difference! The tutor was encouraging and extremely helpful. I continued at these classes for a number of years under excellent teachers until, due to cuts, the teachers' contracts were not renewed.

I then joined a small group that met in the home of an elderly disabled artist. She was no longer able to paint herself but wanted to help and encourage others.

I was in that group until, following the death of my husband, I moved down to Devon. Here I joined an art society, an art class and an art group. I was still using watercolour and also tried pen and ink.

A friend persuaded me to go to a coloured pencil workshop and I was hooked! I then joined a coloured pencil art class. The coloured pencils we use are not crayons, watercolour pencils or the ordinary coloured pencils. The ones we use are an artist quality, oil based pigment that lends itself to layering and blending.

Most of my art work now is in coloured pencil with the occasional pen and ink or graphite pieces.
