April 2017: Watercolour Demonstration with Leanne Ellis
Thanks, Mike for this write-up

Ovas were very fortunate to have secured the services of Leanne Ellis for the evening of the 7th April, when she demonstrated her mastery of watercolour painting technique.

Leanne came all the way from Rowley Regis near Birmingham to be with us at very short notice because both our originally booked demonstrator and her replacement had cancelled due to circumstances
beyond their control.  The society is also endebted to Penny Lamb who had to react very quickly to make the alternative arrangements.

Leanne is a very accomplished artist who works in a variety of media and is a product demonstrator for Windsor and Newton as well as running painting workshops in her home town.  She works very quickly and skillfully so was able to complete two watercolour paintings during the evening, one either side of the tea break.

The first was of a castle in Camarthenshire which she deftly brought to life using a limited pallet of about eight colours including a very effective use of french ultramarine for the sky and hookers green plus yellow ochre for the distant hills.

It had been a sunny afternoon and Leanne arrived early enough to do some watercolour sketching on Jacob’s Ladder beach at Sidmouth.  So for her second painting she chose this as her subject, in a broad panoramic aspect, to the delight of the audience.

At the end of the evening, Mike Bird thanked Leanne, who had also brought along a wide range of her previous work and W&N materials for sale at discount rates, for putting on such an impressive demonstration.

Those present were also fortunate in being able to avail themselves of a sale of materials belonging to the late Valerie Palmer, kindly donated to the society by her husband. Our thanks to Jenny Savage for organising the sale which raised over £70 during the evening.
