5th September 2025: Using Fabrics In Mixed Media with Alison Whateley
Thanks Penny, for these photos and for the write-up. Alison is a contemporary textile and mixed media artist whose work spans both representational and abstract forms, all inspired by the natural world. She is a member of the South West Academy of Fine & Applied Arts and exhibits both locally [eg at Otterton Mill] and nationally. Her work is inspired by the ever-changing landscapes and seascapes of Devon. Working from her studio outside Exeter, she works intuitively, allowing pieces to evolve naturally rather than following a rigid plan. She uses photos as starting points that capture both sweeping views and intricate details of pattern, texture, and colour. These help her capture her personal vision of the beauty and serenity of the natural world. The members of OVAS enjoyed a delightful demonstration with mixed media Artist Alison Whateley on Friday. She is a self taught mixed media artist who uses acrylic paints with fabrics to produce her landscape and seascape pictures. She uses a sewing machine, with a free motion foot and mostly invisible thread so you don’t see the stitches. It is the materials that give the picture texture. Alison showed us how she approaches skies in her paintings, using the acrylic paint incorporated into the textiles in a variety of methods. She uses fine firm Talarton scrim as her backing, or primed cotton canvas. Sometimes she will use Bondaweb to paint onto bubble wrap to transfer to the support, or a jelly plate to print onto the fabric. Fine material such as organza is often used with fabric glue spray to place onto the image. Tyvek material and Lutrador sheets are often utilised , which can be ironed onto the support, using a cloth over the top, before the sewing machine is used. https://alisonwhateleydesign.co.uk/ |
Throughout the process Alison advises using a Mount , so that you can see what the finished product might look like, before framing.
This was an intriguing and interesting way of producing a mixed media painting , which would appeal to those artists who paint and sew.

A typical wonderful example of one of Alison's completed artworks
